Moss phlox
Light requirements: Full sun
Height: 4" - 6"
Spread: 1' - 2'
Water use: Medium
Bloom time: Mar - Jun
A spectacular spring-blooming groundcover, moss phlox is an evergreen perennial that spreads to form a thick, low-lying mat that is perfect for filling bare ground, cascading from elevated spaces or creeping though rock gardens or garden paths. This plant prefers full sun and will flower more profusely in this type of exposure. It can survive in part sun, but will have fewer blooms. It fares best in soils with medium moisture and good drainage, and can thrive in quite sandy conditions.
Moss phlox grows to about 6" tall, but each plant can spread to about 2' wide. This particular cultivar, 'Candy Stripe,' produces masses of white flowers with radiating pale pink stripes from late March through late April, which attract butterflies and other insect pollinators. This plant is an excellent addition to a sunny space with ground to cover, and will put on a floral show in early spring.
