A spectacular spring-blooming groundcover, moss phlox is a semi-evergreen perennial that spreads to form a thick, low-lying mat. It is perfect for filling bare ground, cascading from elevated spaces or creeping though rock gardens or garden paths. Phlox subulata prefers full sun and will flower more profusely in this type of exposure but can survive part sun. It fares best in soils with medium moisture and good drainage, and can thrive in sandy conditions.
Moss phlox grows to about 6" tall, but each plant can spread overtime to about 2' wide. This particular cultivar, 'Emerald Blue,' produces masses of pale lavender flowers from March through late April, which attract butterflies and other insect pollinators. This plant is an excellent addition to any sunny space with ground to cover, and will likely be the first plant to give you a floral show in early spring.
